Bernie O’Brien

Which show(s) do you host?

The Soul Connection with Steve Lewis (Northern Soul, Modern Soul, Motown, Club Classics) on Sundays 6pm-8pm and In The Groove (Jazz Funk, Rare Groove, New Soul releases) on Wednesdays 8pm-10pm.

What is your background?

I’ve been a soul fan for as long as I can remember. I started DJ’ing at my local youth club (Bell Hall, Warrington) back in 1968 and I’ve been hooked ever since, buying Soul records of all varieties. In the early days I DJ’d at clubs, pubs and parties all over the North of England and was a part of the “Northern Soul Club Roadshow”. I’ve owned a record shop in the 70s (Music Medley on Padgate Lane) and I’ve promoted soul venues and hosted soul discussion groups on the (then new) internet. I spent 10 years during the 2000s as musical director for the 60s live acts at the famous Prestatyn soul weekenders.

Why is music your passion?

My taste in music varies across all sections of soul and my shows reflect this diversity. I’m comfortable playing a Motown or Stax classic and following it with a brand new release. For me it’s about quality rhythmic tunes.

Why Radio Warrington?

Warrington has always been a key town for soul music fans with lots of local venues during the 60s (The Co-op Hall on Sunday nights), 70s (The Carlton), 80s (The Carlton & Mr Smiths). Radio Warrington is an ideal platform for broadcasting and celebrating this music.

Tell us something interesting about you?

Bet you didn’t know that I don’t just love Soul Music!
